The professionals trained in the School of Forest Engineers in Madrid are capable of planning, projecting and managing natural areas and the goods and services provided by the forest environment. Its objectives include, among others protecting the soil, maintaining and restoring water balances, ensuring the continuity of plant species, flora and wildlife, improving the rural environment and achieving forest raw materials, both for industrial processing and for direct use. Also within its competence falls the establishment of forest roads and warehouses for the storage and drying of wood.
Forest engineers also study and organize the afforestation and conservation of forest areas. To do this, they thoroughly study the fight against pests and plant diseases, prevention and fire fighting, the protection and promotion of wildlife (both terrestrial and aquatic) and the improvement of vegetal species.
During their studies, the students can choose between two specialities, “Silviculture and Pasture Science” or “Forest Industries”.
• Silviculture and Pasture Science: specialization in forest management and forest exploitation; promotion and management of hunting and fishing; seed and nursery plant selection; forest plantations; the establishment and running of fish and game farms; drainage basin restoration; soil conservation; dune stabilisation; river bed management; maintenance of biological equilibriums; animal breeding; protected natural areas; landscape; ornamental gardening; defence against pollution.
• Forest Industries: specialization in wood industries; cork and resins; essential oils; other forest products and by-products; rural installations; mechanisation and machine endorsement; analysis and quality control; studies and projects on production and defense against industrial pollution.
